A story that lives on to this day
What began in 1949 with the idea of a sauna in the heart of Munich evolved over many decades into what is now Mathilden Hamam. Shaped by change, tradition, and a passion for special moments of relaxation, our timeline chronicles the most important milestones in our establishment’s history.
1956
Munich's First Sauna
In 1949, Wolfgang Brost began bringing his idea for a sauna in the heart of Munich to life at Mathildenstraße 5. The first facility opened as early as January 16, 1950.
Together with his wife, Lilly Brost, he continued to develop the business until the Mathilden Bad officially opened on June 16, 1956.
2000
The Origins of Today's Mathilden Hamam
In 2000, a new chapter began in the history of our establishment. A large-scale renovation resulted in the creation of an oriental hammam and a rasul.
At the same time, a new concept was developed that combined the unique atmosphere of the hamam with traditional rituals and soothing massages.
2018
Expansion of Our Spa
In 2018, the Mathilden Hamam underwent extensive renovations and was significantly expanded. Entirely new facilities and a new hamam created even more space for tranquility, warmth, and relaxation.
And so our spa continued to evolve without losing its familiar character and history.
2022
Founding of Atelier Hamam
In 2022, we continued the legacy of our establishment with the founding of Atelier Hamam. In our online shop, we offer a curated selection of beauty and cosmetic products, as well as unique fragrances, that allow you to experience the essence of Mathilden Hamam beyond your spa visit and bring a touch of well-being into your home.
2025
25 Years of Mathilden Hamam
In 2025, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of what is now Mathilden Hamam. This special milestone fills us with great gratitude.
